It also enhances the absorption of skincare products. However, this is not a one-day affair. And you must do it right. 

I have tried several skin products to pursue smooth, bright, and even skin. But most of the time, I was disappointed. And many times, my skin was left worse than before. However, along the journey, I learned the need for a consistent skincare routine to achieve lighter, glowing skin

Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin from the body. It can be done using a granular substance, chemical, or exfoliation tool. Usually, the human skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make room for new cells every month (skin cells regenerate). However, aging and sun exposure may slow this process, hence the need to exfoliate. 

There are two types of exfoliation; physical and chemical. While both methods are effective, the best will come down to personal choice.  

Physical Exfoliation

Physical exfoliation involves manually removing dead skin using gloves, brushes, exfoliating mitts, loofahs, pumice stones, micro-needling or micro derma rollers, and face scrubs. Some scrubs may include apricot seeds and pearl stones. They work by physically scrubbing off the topmost layer of the skin that contains dirt and dead skin.

Physical exfoliants should be used with utmost care as rubbing them too aggressively against the skin could cause damage and ruin your skin.

Chemical exfoliation

Chemical exfoliation involves the use of an acid to dissolve dead skin cells. It weakens the bonds holding together skin cells, enabling dead skin removal. There are various types of chemicals used in chemical exfoliation. For now, let’s look at these two: 

  •  Alpha-hydroxy acids [AHAs] 
  •  Beta-hydroxy acids [BHAs].

  Alpha-hydroxy acids [AHAs] 

AHAs are a group of water-soluble acids usually extracted from sugary fruits. AHAs are very effective in brightening the skin, and treating hyperpigmentation like age spots, melasma, scars, uneven skin tone, enlarged pores, fine lines, and wrinkles. Some of the most commonly used AHAs include:

  • glycolic acid
  • malic acid 
  • lactic acid
  • tartaric acid
  • citric acid

Chemical exfoliation dissolves and loosens debris, while physical exfoliation scrubs the debris and dead skin. Each exfoliation method has benefits and downsides depending on what you want to achieve, existing skin conditions, and skin type. 

Chemical exfoliation is usually milder than physical exfoliation. It is, therefore, best for dry or sensitive skin. But this does not mean you cannot do physical exfoliation if you have dry and sensitive skin. You can. Just use a gentle physical exfoliator like a washcloth or soft brush. 

Moreover, if you have oily skin, you can choose a more aggressive chemical exfoliator or use physical exfoliation for better results. Keep in mind physical exfoliation is harsh on the skin. Additionally, check the ingredients used; some may cause micro-tears on the skin, causing breakage and rough skin. Also, some acids can cause sun sensitivity leading to sunburns. So, ensure to use broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Do I Need Both Physical and Chemical Exfoliants?

As discussed above, both methods are effective. It all comes down to your skin and preference. However, your skin could actually benefit from both physical and chemical exfoliation. Just ensure to do it right and in moderation.

How long does it take for exfoliation to lighten skin?

While we all want immediate results, seeing results will take time. The duration will depend on several factors, such as skin type, existing skin conditions, and the method of exfoliation used. Generally, it takes 4-8 weeks to see results. However, along the way, you’ll notice an improvement if you consistently do it correctly. Here is a timeline.

  1. Immediate effects– You may experience smoothness as dead skin is removed.
  2. Short-term effects (1-2 weeks)–  You may notice a reduction in minor skin irregularities 
  3. Medium-term effects (2-4 weeks)- You may notice a brighter complexion, radiant skin, and even skin tone. 
  4. Long-term effects (4+ weeks)– You will now experience a smoother overall complexion, minimized pores, reduced wrinkles, and lighter skin.

How Can I Use Exfoliation to Lighten Skin?

To lighten your skin using exfoliation, follow the following tips:

  • Choosing the right exfoliant for your skin type 

Chemical exfoliants containing acids such as alpha hydroxy or lactic acid lighten the skin. If you have dry or sensitive skin, using a washcloth and a mild chemical exfoliator is best to avoid irritating your skin.

 Physical exfoliants with smooth beads are also effective for soft or sensitive skin. But if your skin is oily and thick, you can use a stronger chemical exfoliator. However, don’t use strong chemical exfoliators if you have a darker skin tone, as you may get dark spots.

  • Be consistent 

Consistency is crucial in every skincare routine. As discussed above, results will take time. However, remember you can’t exfoliate daily as over-exfoliation can cause redness and irritation. Depending on your skin type and exfoliation method, find the proper schedule. 

  • Combine exfoliation with brightening ingredients. 

 Add lightening products such as Vitamin C, kojic acid, niacinamide, mandelic acid, or hydroquinone to help fade pigmentation faster.

  • Use sunscreen 

 Exfoliation makes the skin more sensitive and therefore needs a protective layer against harmful UV rays. UV exposure stimulates the production of melanin.

  •  Be gentle with your skin.

  • Coffee

  • Sugar
  • Ground almonds
  • Oatmeal
  • Sea salt
  • Cinnamon

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 4 tbsp. ground oatmeal
  • ¼ cup honey
